Candlemas

On 2nd February, we celebrated Candlemas in School. The Classes took it in turns to dip their wicks into the wax, and through patience, gradually built up the layers to eventually make a candle.  Some of the older classes managed to make beautiful twisted candles by dipping two wicks at once.

Thank you to all the parents who came in and helped with the Candle dipping.

Candlemas is celebrated on February 2, the date that falls halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. It is a celebration of the noticeable lengthening of the days, marking the start of banishing Winter.

In Kindergarten, the children made an earth candle and rang a little bell to wake up the spring bulbs.

If Candlemas Day be fair and bright
Winter will have another flight.
If Candlemas Day brings cloud and rain,
Winter won’t come again.

If Candlemas Day be dry and fair,
The half of the Winter’s to come and Mair;
If Candlemas Day be wet and foul,
The half of the winter’s gone at Yule.

Gardening

The 5th February marked the Jewish festival of tu BiShvat.  This festival is also called Rosh Hashanah La'llanot, and literally translates as the "New Year of the Trees" and is widely celebrated as an ecological awareness day.  In honour of the festival, Class III children heard the story of Honi the Cirlce maker and the Carob Tree, before planting a fig tree in the Community Orchard on the Green.

Class VI

In their Biomes main lesson block, Class VI have spent the last three weeks building up their own maps of the world.  Each biome was introduced with a description of the climate, weather, landscape, vegetation and animal life, along with stories and images.  Each day the class would fill in more of their map until at the end of the block they are full and completed with care and attention.

If you are driving your child/children to School, please do not park in front of the School or block the walk (Taransay Walk) as it is a danger to children who cycle down the side of the School  at drop off and pick up.

ADVENT FAIR UPDATE

After a couple of years hiatus, our Advent Fair was a huge success, making £6980 for the School.

We raised £720 money on the door which will be donated to two charities...

Our local youth centre Rose Bowl on the Green

https://www.rosebowlislington.org.uk/about

Rose Bowl is a play and youth provision for children and young people aged 8 - 21. We provide a fun, friendly and inclusive environment aimed to build resilience, aid social skills, and improve physical and mental health.

We are open during the school term and holidays at different times for our various age ranges. All our services are free of charge and we welcome people from all backgrounds and areas. Activities include arts, crafts, cooking, outdoor play and gardening, sports, music production and general play and youth sessions.

Free Steiner Waldorf Kindergarten in Sri Lanka, see below.

The SPCG will have around £6200 to spend on our future landscaping plans.  The next meeting will be on 23rd May in School.

This Kindergarten in Sri Lanka is the only free Steiner-Waldorf Kindergarten in the country which was opened in response to the vast Tsunami that devastated the region.

It is called “Sammudra Thera Miha Vihara” near Kamburugawamuwa beach with local teachers who are employed by donations that local monks raise and in the past by tourists.

Due to border closures and lockdowns, the school has been heavily impacted. They have also seen a huge increase in the cost of living this year. They are very grateful to St Paul's for this generous donation.
