This is an exiting step into the next phase of the child's school life, and the child must have reached a certain point of maturity in their development to meet this challenge with confidence. The acceptance into Class I from Kindergarten is not automatic but the Kindergarten teacher, Class I teacher and school doctor will closely work together to determine if the child is ready to go into Class I. Children usually turn seven in Class I, but each case is treated individually.

In establishing the new rhythm, the first few weeks of Class I are of great importance, and it is imperative that the child attendsschool from the first day of term. At St Paul 's, children new to Class I usually attend until 1 o'clock each day until at least Christmas. Thereafter the class teacher will decide whether to extend their hours.
